I'm an amateur photographer in Toronto with an interest in aviation and gear (perhaps in reverse order). I built this site primarily to host the 'so-called' screening toolbar, but have expanded to share my experiences and photos.
Enjoy.
The origin story:
After enjoying a nice day of watching airplanes and taking pictures of them at my local airport, I decided to try my hand at uploading to [website]. Perusing (yes, that definition) the upload guidelines, I was pretty sure I had a good chance to get my picture accepted. While I waited the insanely long time for my five pictures to work their way through the queue, I made this site.
Not surprisingly, 15 days later of sitting in the queue, my photos were rejected with a delightful assortment of reasons. (not to mention, now I get to sit in the penalty box while the rejections clear)
Undeterred, I went to [website]'s forums to learn more about plane spotting. What I saw there was truly unhinged. Pre-screening they call it, where victims post their photos for public review.
"Vignetting" it says...as I'm turning the brightness up and down on my screen to try and see the light falloff of a beautiful blue sky. "Dirty" it said...so here I am cleaning my computer screen to see if I can tell if THAT smudge was on my monitor, or in the picture. "Soft" as I look at a perfectly well-focused photo.
These people are crazy, blind, or both I thought.
I saw this as an opportunity to build a FUN tool to capture the absurdity of this hobby, and document what I've learned along the way. Spotting purists: don't be offended, remember this is supposed to be fun.
